Growth Assessment

Growth Assessment

We often assume child's chronological age dictates their developmental stage but on the contrary development of every child is distinct. If certain developmental milestones aren’t met by the child at the expected time, it does not necessarily mean that the child has developmental delay. Development in children follows the same sequence but the time and manner of attainment of a milestone may vary. But if such delays continue then it might be a cause of concern.

There are various screening charts that help to track the normal development of the child and help early detection of children with developmental delay. Parents should be aware of the common red flag signs if the child –

  • Produces no sound by 6 months
  • Can’t sit without support by 9-10 months
  • Can’t stand alone by 16 months
  • Can’t walk without support alone by 18 months
  • Lack of imaginative play by 3 years

Parents are the experts for their child. If they feel their child is lagging behind compared to other children, or the school teacher points out any area of concern, a prompt developmental screening followed by detailed evaluation should be done. Early diagnosis and early intervention have a positive impact on the outcome of such children.
